The only thing that does make the email text appear is clicking "reply," "reply all," or "forward." If there is any text, even opening the individual email does not help. If the email contains only forwarded images, the images appear with no distortion. Double clicking on the individual message produces mixed results. The list of mailboxes on the left and the inbox mail in the center column are fine, but the content in the message itself is unreadable. After installing the macOS Sierra 10.12.6 via the App Store updater, the Mail app message pane is either completely black or half black, half distorted images from Mail attachments.
